- Papy Mendy started for Senegal in their CAF Africa Cup of Nations last-16 tie on Tuesday
- Goals from Sadio Mané and Bamba Dieng sealed the country's passage through to the last eight
- The midfielder is Leicester City's last remaining player in the competition in Cameroon

Having made his first start of the competition in Senegal's final group match in the draw with Malawi, Mendy was again selected from the off by head coach Aliou Cissé in Bafoussam.

There was drama midway through the first half when Cape Verde midfielder Patrick Andrade was given a straight red card following a VAR review, leaving his side down to 10 men.

Goalless at the break, Cape Verde received a second red card on 57 minutes after a clash of heads between 'keeper Vozinha and Liverpool's Sadio Mané, with the shot-stopper being dismissed for his role in the collision.

Shortly before being substituted, Mané gave his side the lead with a shot that went in via the underside of the crossbar. Progression was then secured in added time when Bamba Dieng scored after latching onto Famara Diedhiou's pass.

The Lions of Teranga will now face either Mali or Equatorial Guinea, who play in Tuesday's second last-16 fixture, in the quarter-finals on Sunday 30 January.

Mendy is the final Foxes player involved in the tournament. On Sunday, Nigeria - featuring both Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho - bowed out at the last-16 stage at the hands of Tunisia. Meanwhile, Daniel Amartey's Ghana were unable to qualify from their group.
