Maddison, Vardy, Barnes & Daka – City's 2021/22 Top Scorers

It was a landmark season for the former Norwich City playmaker, who struck 18 times in all competitions for the Foxes. Elsewhere, Jamie Vardy, the Club's all-time record Premier League goalscorer, trailed Maddison by just a single goal. City's No.9 ended the campaign on 17 goals. 

With attentions starting to the turn to 2022/23 - a year which promises plenty for Brendan Rodgers' men - we take one glance back to our most prolific marksmen last term...

James Maddison – 18

It came as a surprise to nobody in May when James Maddison was presented with the Club's Mens Player of the Season prize. The 25-year-old was in fearsome form for much of the season, especially from the winter months onwards. Leicester's No.10 had to wait until October for his maiden goal of the campaign, striking the winner in a 2-1 success at Brentford. A three-goal haul in as many matches as November became December also built confidence. 

Another flurry of goals - in consecutive games against Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester City - was a further reminder of his talents over Christmas.  Whether it was a brace of stunners at Randers in the UEFA Europa Conference League, or a magnificent free-kick against Brentford once more, it was clear that 'Madders' was at the top of his game in 2022. A reminder, if needed, arrived at Stamford Bridge as Maddison hit another belter at Chelsea.

Jamie Vardy – 17

Since Jamie Vardy's introduction to the Premier League back in 2014 - a sensational performance to inspire City to a 5-3 win over Manchester United - no defender has ever taken Leicester's No.9 lightly. Described by ex-Foxes striker Tony Cottee as 'like a fine wine', it would be hard to disagree. Despite being absent for all of January and February and most of March and April, Vardy not only hit double figures again - he struck on 17 occasions.

An opening-day hit against Wolverhampton Wanderers set the tone for the 35-year-old, who followed it up against Norwich City a fortnight later. His 150th goal for the Club arrived at Brighton & Hove Albion in September, while the season would end with Vardy becoming the Club's third-highest all-time top goalscorer. Across 138 years of Leicester City history, only Arthur Chandler (273) and Arthur Rowley (265) have scored more than Vardy's 164.

Harvey Barnes – 11

Harvey Barnes has always been honest about his development and the next steps needed - City's No.7 wants to score more goals. A second season reaching double figures can surely be regarded as a positive for the England international, who spread his goals across the Premier League, the Emirates FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League. 

Now-traditional goals against Leeds United - both at home and away - swelled his tally, as did a superb brace in the 5-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road in May. Often charging in from the left channel, switching the ball onto his right foot, there's a pattern to Barnes' Leicester goals in 2021/22.

Patson Daka – 11

The 2021/22 was always likely to be a season of transition for Patson Daka in the Zambia international's debut year in the Premier League. At times, that proved to be the case for the former RB Salzburg striker, but it was a campaign littered with memorable moments too. A new celebration for young Foxes supporters to replicate on the school playground was also added to the collection with Daka's trademark hand-gesture, covering his face.

Daka's season highlight, meanwhile, is undoubtedly a star turn in Moscow in October. Leicester needed points and one wouldn't really be enough when they travelled to Russia in the UEFA Europa League group stage. Their predicament grew worse in the first half with Spartak opening a two-goal lead. Four goals from Daka, though, would ultimately seal a stunning 4-3 win. He would also become the first player since Derek Hines to achieve such a feat.
