Match Preview - LCFC Women vs. Arsenal
After defeat to Reading last weekend, Leicester are still looking for their first points of the season, whilst Arsenal are currently second in the WSL, with a 100 per cent record from five games.
In preparation of City’s home battle with the Gunners, take a deeper delve into both sides, and check all the match information you’ll need ahead of the weekend.
The Foxes camp
Last weekend’s conclusion at Select Car Leasing Stadium certainly stung City’s camp as two injury-time goals from Rachel Rowe ensured victory for the Royals, leaving Leicester at the foot of the WSL.
However, there were certainly positives to take for the Foxes, in particular from Natasha Flint, who opened the scoring with a fantastic first-half strike.
Leading for most of the game and scoring a first open-play goal of the season will come as a comfort for City as they plan to block Arsenal’s league advances.
The opposition
Arsenal Women are currently celebrating their 35th anniversary. Having been crowned champions of the WSL three times, most recently in 2019, they’re enjoying a successful opening to this campaign with five wins in five.
Starting the season with a 4-0 home win against Brighton & Hove Albion Women, the Gunners saw off north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in similar fashion. More recently, Arsenal beat West Ham United 3-1 at Meadow Park where England international Jordan Nobbs scored her first of the season.
Arriving on Filbert Way with an assembly of high-profile talent, they will be without Arsenal and England captain Leah Williamson, who suffered a foot injury a few weeks ago.
In the dugout
Jonas Eidevall resides in the dugout for Arsenal, currently taking charge of the Gunners for his second season, after replacing Joe Montemurro in 2021.
The 39-year-old began his coaching career in his homeland, Sweden. Leading FC Rosengård to back-to-back league titles between 2013 and 2014, he briefly served under Henrik Larsson as the assistant manager of men’s side Helsingborgs IF, before returning to his former club in Sweden’s top division of women’s football to win another league title in 2019 and reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Last time out
When both sides met last season, Arsenal were victorious on both occasions. Seeing off the Foxes with a 4-0 home win, before defeating City 5-0 at King Power Stadium in early April of this year.
With Vivianne Miedema scoring three goals across the two fixtures, the Dutch international will be one for the Leicester back-line to mark tightly, as they welcome last season’s runners-up on Sunday afternoon.
