There’s Still Work To Do, Says Tierney

Sam Tierney scored and assisted another in LCFC Women's Barclays Women’s Super League win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, and the new-born midfielder believes the team are looking to carry this positivity forward.

After scoring from the bench during a convincing success against Sunderland, Tierney continued her brilliant form with a goal against Brighton as the Foxes picked up their first points of the season.

Stepping in to replace the sidelined Abbie McManus, who sadly suffered an injury in the North East, the No.3 played her part for the team as they brought some energy to Filbert Way with an electric performance.

“We spoke before the game about it being a fresh start,” Tierney told LCFC TV. “We've worked very hard over the Christmas period, so it's nice to see what we've been working on, come onto the pitch and get a result. But as with anything, we've still got a lot of work to do now.

“I think we knew as a team that our performances weren't far off, but in this league, you need to turn that into results. So, we've stayed positive, we've stuck together, and you know that's the boost, I think that we'll need now for this last part of the season.”

After what was more than a productive week for Leicester, the Fox is getting accustomed to her new position and is happy to develop her game further to help the team.

“I didn't know that (the fact that she had picked up two goals and two assists in two games), so that's probably something to think about,” she continued.

“But, for me, every time I get the opportunity to play for this Club, I give everything, and I'd like to think that people can see that.

We have remained confident, but you always get a boost of confidence when you've got points on the board.

“I've been playing slightly higher recently, so it's good for me to get involved in the goals aspect. It's something I've identified as an area I want to work on. So, yes, it's positive for me to score and hopefully that will happen again.

“The good thing for us is we've got a lot of games coming up in quite quick succession. So, our focus now turns to midweek as we try and get through in the cup, and hopefully get more results on the board and climb the table.”

The first goal on Sunday afternoon, assisted by Tierney, was a well-worked finish that resulted in Aileen Whelan finishing past Seagulls 'keeper Megan Walsh, and Tierney stated it is something that the team have been working.

The extended highlights as City pick up three points in the Barclays Women's Super League at King Power Stadium.

“We’ve done a lot of work during recent weeks of being a bit cleverer around the penalty box and in tight areas and probably just being a bit more confident in our ability,” Sunday’s goalscorer explained. “I think we were all happy and pleased with that one and hopefully we can add to that again.

“It was probably a bit lucky, but I was reading Aileen's [Whelan] header, and I just knew that I could be in that dangerous zone, and hopefully get something on it, and that happens in this league. That is the little detail that turns performances into results.

“We have remained confident, but you always get a boost of confidence when you've got points on the board. But when you're seeing your performances build week on week, the confidence is there. But we must remain grounded and stay concentrated on the next game ahead really.”
