On a wet night in the capital, the Foxes fell to a 6-0 defeat to current Barclays Women’s Super League champions Chelsea, after four first-half goals set the tone at Kingsmeadow.

Struggling to put in a similar performance that resulted in a tight affair against Arsenal last time out, Whelan could only commend the hosts’ performance.

“We can’t take the result away from Chelsea,” the captain told LCFC TV. “They’re a good side and good luck to them on the weekend. Hopefully they can go and win the Vitality Women’s FA Cup final.

It’s just about sticking to game plans and performing individually but also as a group.

“In the first half, we were five seconds off the mark, we didn’t put our bodies on the line, and we weren’t the team we should be, so we’re disappointed in that.

“In the second half, we came out with a few tweaks to how we were setting up, and we put more of a battle on by showing more quality and composure on the ball as well as out of possession.”

Looking ahead, Leicester head back home for the first time since their impressive 4-0 outing against Liverpool when they take on West Ham United at King Power Stadium in just over a week’s time.

Whelan: Five Seconds Off The Mark

Captain Aileen Whelan provides her thoughts on LCFC Women's 6-0 loss to Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

With two games left against the Hammers and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively, the No.10 has belief in her side’s ability to pick up the necessary points to confirm WSL football for next season.

“We disappointed in our own performances,” the midfielder continued. “We’ve got West Ham coming up next week which is a more important game for us. So, we’ll digest this result and turn our attention to next weekend.

“We know we can stay in this league; we’ve shown against Liverpool and Brighton that we can do it. We’re not downhearted by performances and results. We always keep the belief. It’s just about sticking to game plans and performing individually but also as a group.”
