‘We Did The Business’ – Mavididi’s Saints Reflections
- Stephy Mavididi assessed Leicester City’s display in the wake of the 4-1 win at Southampton
- The Foxes netted four goals on the road on Friday evening as league action returned
- The attacker scored one and assisted another at St. Mary’s Stadium
- Enzo Maresca’s side briefly returned to the top of the Sky Bet Championship
- It’s Norwich City away up next on Wednesday evening (8pm kick-off)
Friday night’s return to Sky Bet Championship action was a successful one for the Foxes, bouncing back from the disappointment of losing out to Hull City prior to the international break.
And Enzo Maresca’s men did it in some style too, putting four past the Saints in their own back yard courtesy of goals from Jamie Vardy, Kasey McAteer, Wilfred Ndidi - and Mavididi himself in the second half.
Speaking in the aftermath of the 4-1 success, the Leicester City attacker said: “Obviously, we had that sour taste of coming off the defeat from Hull. We wanted to make things right and away from home, it's always difficult coming to a place like Southampton. They play good football, but we played well as a team and did the business.
“For the last one, I was thinking it's now or never, you've got to score this one. Thank God, it went in. I had a few chances before, maybe could have made better decisions, but the main, important thing is that we got the three points.”
Stephy Mavididi vs. Southampton
Stephy Mavididi completes the scoring for the Foxes in their 4-1 triumph at Southampton.
The summer signing also had a hand in the opener, which came just 21 seconds in, winning possession high up the pitch and exchanging a one-two with Vardy before again finding City’s No.9 in the middle to finish. It was exactly the start that City were craving.
Talking through the goal, the 25-year-old said: “Before the game, we always say to start strong, so when I intercepted that pass, I had one thing on my mind - just attack them straight away, put them on the back foot. It was a good start from us, the best start.
“We just built momentum from there. When he (Maresca) says to attack them, I'm literally dancing in my head. Getting the ball and running at players, it's something I like to do. It's one of my qualities, and I'll just try and help the team as much as possible. We've got a lot of pace in the forward areas and it's exciting.”
Mavididi: We Made The Best Start
Goalscorer Stephy Mavididi reflects on a thoroughly enjoyable 4-1 win at Southampton for the Foxes.
There’s little time to bask in the glory of this fifth win from six league matches. Leicester must move forward quickly and focus on the upcoming trip to Carrow Road to face Norwich City on Wednesday (8pm kick-off). Nevertheless, Mavididi sees good signs from the way the squad have approached every game so far.
“I think there's a lot more to come, it's still early days,” the former Montpellier winger admitted. “Us as a team, we always listen to the gaffer. He comes with new ideas and he tries to implement them in training, and obviously we try to implement it in the matches.
“We've got to stick together, keep our feet on the ground and take it game by game. We've just got to continue - keep working hard, keep playing the way we are and keep listening to the gaffer. Everyone's tuned in, which is good.”
