Leicester City In 2023/24: Records Broken & Others In Sight

Since the opening-day triumph over Coventry City, Enzo Maresca's side have locked a laser focus on the second tier's promotion places, losing just once all season in the league (W10 D0 L1). That's seen them also overcome Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City, Rotherham United, Southampton, Norwich City, Bristol City, Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End and Stoke City.

Never before has any City side over 139 years of history made such an impressive start. If the Foxes pick up a point or three at Swansea City after the international break, it'll also be the best start by any team in Championship history. Neil Warnock's Sheffield United side of 2005/06 were the last outfit to earn 30 points from a possible 33 at the outset of a second-tier term.

The Blades finished that season in second place, behind Reading, who accrued a record 106 points. The Foxes' strongest points tally was 2013/14's total of 102. Aside from this year, the next best opening to a league campaign in Leicester takes us back to 2002/03. Also recently relegated from the Premier League, Leicester were under the management of Micky Adams in their first year on Filbert Way.

City picked up 26 points (W8, D2, L1) between a day-one success against Watford and a 1-0 victory vs. Wolves over an 11-game spell. Adams' Foxes ended up as runners-up that season, trailing only Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth. 

In 1899/00, on the other hand, back in the days of two points for a win, Leicester Fosse went 11 games unbeaten at the start of that campaign (W7, D4, L0), scooping 18 points - the equivalent of 25 points today. A fifth-place finish, though, prolonged their stay in the old Second Division into a seventh year - evidence that a positive start must be backed up over the whole season for it to end in glory. 

Incidentally, the Foxes have already this term matched their record run of consecutive away league wins (5), last achieved in the 2013/14 season, which ended in the Championship title under Nigel Pearson.

There's still some way for them to do likewise in the home stakes though. It's now three in a row at King Power Stadium, but it would take another 11 victories to surpass the 1906/07 term's incredible 13 home wins in succession. Three successive wins in the next three matches, on the other hand, will see Maresca's Leicester City equal a Club record nine consecutive league victories home and away, also achieved in 2013/14. 

There's a long way to go this season - 35 matches in all. The fixture schedule will bite at some point too and City will face challenges aplenty from their Championship rivals. The omens, though, at this early stage at least are promising as the Foxes fix their sights on promotion back to the top flight.
