Links With The Past: City's 1964 League Cup Win
The four-sided programme illustrated here is from the first leg of the final, which was played at Stoke City’s waterlogged Victoria Ground.
Missing from the Leicester City side printed on the programme’s cover were the injured Richie Norman and Frank McLintock. Max Dougan (misspelt as Duggan) and Terry Heath played instead. Ken Keyworth also featured at centre-forward rather than Tom Sweenie.
The two centre pages describe City’s road to the final and provide pen pictures of each of their players. The back page details Stoke’s route, together with their goalscorers in all competitions that season.
League Cup Final tankard 1964
This tankard was presented to Leicester City's winners.
Leicester escaped with a 1-1 draw in the game, largely due to a world-class display by their goalkeeper Gordon Banks and to Davie Gibson netting a late equaliser.
After winning the second leg 3-2 at Filbert Street, with goals from Mike Stringfellow, Davie Gibson and Howard Riley, the victorious City players each received a tankard rather than the traditional medal. This tankard illustrated here was presented to Howard Riley.
