After back-to-back victories over Bristol City and Everton in the Barclays Women’s Super League, City faced their toughest opponent yet in Manchester United.

A goal for either side meant the points were shared and Whelan took it as a point to build on, after a busy week which also included a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Continental Tyres League Cup.

“I think in the first half we didn't quite get it right,” the captain explained. “We made a few adjustments at half-time and I think that made the difference. We came out fighting, and we knew that we could put a  show on and get a result.

Extended highlights from Leigh Sports Village as City picked up a point against Manchester United in the Barclays Women's Super League.

“The mentality shift was key, coming here knowing that we weren't going to leave without at least a point, if not three. Last year we probably would have just thrown the towel in, and we stuck at it for 90 minutes and we made sure we came out with the point.

“It’s the back end of a three game week, and credit to all the players. Everyone's played their part throughout the week and again, unbeaten now; so three out of three.”

Leicester opened the scoring on the hour mark when the No.10 calmy finished a volley low past Lionesses’ goalkeeper Mary Earps, but after conceding shortly afterwards to Maya Le Tissier, was full of praise for the Foxes ‘keeper Janina Leitzig.

“Jani every game, we rely on her a lot,” she stated. “But that's why she's in the net. And she's doing us proud every game. We know whoever's taking the shot, that Janina is going to come close, if not, save every one of them.

Everyone Played Their Part, Says Whelan

Captain Aileen Whelan was proud of the LCFC Women performance that earned a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Barclays Women's Super League.

“And then other end, when you get the opportunity, you've got to score them. So thankfully, I did. We've got some really good headers of the ball, so I kind of let them go in the mix of it all. And I was hoping it would drop down, and it did, and I just had to stay composed and place it through the bodies.

“I had one in pre-season, very similar that I didn't do so well at. So I've been practising them ones and it's just about composure and finding the corners.”

Unbeaten this season, with three wins and a draw in their first four games, encouraging form has led to Belvoir Drive becoming an energetic environment during the week, and the former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder believes that there has been a shift in mentality.

Whelan added: “Even around the training ground, there's a buzz. We're confident and we know what we can achieve, and we know what our targets are and we are going to go out and make sure we achieve that and more.”
