Leicester City have been drawn against Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Having already defeated La Liga side Sevilla in the last-16, the Foxes were pitted against Diego Simeone’s men following the draw in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.
The first leg will take place at the 55,000-seater Vicente Calderón Stadium on Wednesday 12 April, before the return leg is scheduled for Tuesday 18 April.
Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare said: “Facing a team who have reached the final in two of the last three seasons is a massive challenge but it’s just the kind of tie you expect in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Atletico Madrid are a very good team with some fantastic individuals with experience in the competition, but we’ll be ready to give everything to progress.
“It will be a brilliant occasion for our supporters and for everyone at the Club but, before the players can begin to think about these games, we have Premier League matches to come that are of huge significance to our season. They will be our sole focus.”
It will be the third time that Leicester have faced Atletico Madrid in European competition over two legs, with the first two encounters taking place in the second round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup during the 1961/62 campaign.
City drew 1-1 at Filbert Street, with Ken Keyworth on the scoresheet, before suffering a 2-0 defeat in the Spanish capital. Atletico eventually went on to win the competition.
Their most recent encounter with the 10-time La Liga winners came in the form of a first round UEFA Cup tie. The Foxes lost the first leg 2-1 away from home, despite Ian Marshall netting in Madrid, before a 2-0 defeat followed in Leicester.
Atletico’s path to the last-eight came as a result of finishing top of Group D earlier this season above Bayern Munich, before dispatching Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 with a 4-2 aggregate victory.
