Foxes Fall To Palace Defeat On Filbert Way

LCFC Women fell to a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Crystal Palace in the Barclays Women's Super League on Sunday afternoon.

A second half brace from Annabel Blanchard gave the newly-promoted side their first win of the season, while a frustrated City side remain on one point this season after defeat at King Power Stadium.

There were two changes made by Amandine Miquel to the starting XI that narrowly missed out on a point against Arsenal, bringing in goalkeeper Janina Leitzig and Saori Takarada for Lize Kop and Yuka Momiki; Academy player Nelly Las was also on the bench after making her senior debut against Bristol City in midweek.

The Foxes had a golden opportunity to take the lead inside five minutes when muscling play from Noémie Mouchon allowed her the chance to play the ball across goal to Jutta Rantala, but with the Palace 'keeper closing down the angle, the forward's chip was wide of the mark.

A first WSL start of the season for Takarada.

Over the next 20 minutes, it was the visitors looking most lively, with Leicester struggling to get a decent hold on the game, causing a scare for Leitzig when a bouncing ball towards an empty net had to be dealt with by Julie Thibaud.

City's only other chance in the half once again fell to Rantala, who tried her luck from range, but saw a fierce effort flash wide of the post before the referee's whistle.

Miquel made one change at the break, introducing Shana Chossenotte - who scored her first goal for the Club this week - for Takarada, in order to try and get higher up the pitch and cause problems to the Palace backline.

Although looking lively on the right wing, it was the visitors from London that drew first blood when Blanchard fired in from close range, scoring the club's first goal in the WSL this season.

City struggled to find a way through the Palace defence.

Little before the 70th-minute mark, the day went from bad to worse for City who conceded a penalty, offering Blanchard the opportunity to score a second on Filbert Way, which she duly accepted, converting from 12 yards.

The rain started to fall heavier towards the final whistle, replicating the mood around the stadium, as the hosts struggled to find a way past a resilient Palace defence, who picked up their first points since promotion to the top flight.

A busy week of home fixtures was brought to an end moments later, with City now hoping to regroup and refocus for when they travel to Villa Park next week to face Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon (2pm BST kick-off).
