The Club was very sorry to hear of the passing of Gordon Wills, who died on 10 January, 2018.
Gordon Wills was a left winger who was signed by Matt Gillies for £9,000 for Leicester City from Second Division Notts County in May 1958.
He was a key figure in consolidating Leicester City’s position in the ‘old’ First Division and would have undoubtedly played in Leicester City’s FA Cup Final side in 1961 against Tottenham Hotspur had he not been injured in the first drawn semi- final against Sheffield United.
In those days before substitutes he continued to play in that game, aggravating the injury. He recovered to play for the first half of the following season and was an ever-present in Leicester City’s 1961/62 European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign.
However the arrival of Mike Stringfellow in January 1962 prompted Gordon’s move to Walsall at the end of the season, bringing an end to his time at Leicester City for whom he played 128 games and scored 33 goals.
On hearing the news, Howard Riley, a team mate of Gordon’s, paid tribute to Gordon by saying: “I got on very well with Gordon. He was a good team player and commanded a lot of respect.”
The Club’s sympathies go to Gordon’s wife Arlene and his family and friends at this sad time.
