Rodgers Strives To Build Upon Foxes Progress

Following last weekend’s 3-1 success over Fulham, City head to Lancashire to tackle Sean Dyche’s 17th-placed Clarets with the aspiration of securing back-to-back victories.

Rodgers revealed that the post-match analysis with his coaching staff of that win against Fulham presented several positives that the Northern Irishman will aim to build upon this season.

City’s attacking play was fluid, with Demarai Gray and Harvey Barnes pressing high up the pitch in support of Jamie Vardy, while they were also defensively solid for long spells.

Speaking to the national media ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Burnley, Rodgers said: “I think it’s always important to win after you win - that’s our message.

“I was really pleased with the performance (against Fulham) having had that full week to work with the players, and we looked to impose the ideas.

“When I went away after the game and watched it, it was actually better than what I thought at the time.

“There was lots of really good moments, in particular in the first half, and we had a setback in the early part of the second half in the game, but the players showed what good teams do.

“Good teams will start quickly and finish strongly and, in that first 20 minutes, we got the goal – with opportunities to score more – and then we finished the game really strongly.

“So there was lots of encouraging signs in the game, but of course, there’s still a long, long way to go for us.

“We go into the game at the weekend – which will be another tough game for us – after we’ve had another good week up until now and we’re excited about the game.”

Rodgers, who has previously worked at Liverpool and Celtic in recent seasons, also elaborated on Vardy’s progress under his guidance.

The 32-year-old has scored three goals in Rodgers’ two games in charge, while his second Fulham strike was his 100th for the Club – making him just the seventh player to reach that landmark.

“From the outside, looking in, you saw him for what he was, which is a top-class goalscorer, who was the focal point of a title-winning team,” the Foxes manager added.

“Everyone knows his journey, but it’s only really when you come in and you work with someone and you see them close up and you see the real value of them.

“Because, as a footballer, he’s tactically very, very good. He’s not just a boy that scores goals and runs forward, his ability to understand the game from a tactical perspective is very good.

“He will really be the focus of when we press the game and it’s good because he can participate in that because tactically he’s very good.

“He has a real mental strength, he loves to train, he wants to work. He’s early 30s but he wants to get better. You can see the strength in his legs, the speed in his game.”

Rodgers, who coached Luis Suárez at Liverpool and has helped several strikers flourish in his managerial a career so far, also revealed how Vardy’s role can develop under his stewardship.

He continued: “For me, it was [similar] when I went into Liverpool, I saw Luis Suárez, and Luis was made the pivotal player of the front line.

“The team then followed behind him and I look at Jamie in a similar aspect really. He’s a fantastic player, but he can’t do it all on his own.

“It has to be 11 players all working together and that starts from the front. He’s a good guy, he loves his training, like I say, and hopefully he’s got plenty more goals left in him.”
