Top Premier League Goalscorers: Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez's 39 Premier League goals for Leicester City places the Algerian wizard in second place in the Club's all-time top goalscorers charts in the competition.
More on this story...

Signed for a nominal fee from French outfit Le Havre in 2014, Mahrez's first action in City's colours was to help his new side secure the Championship title, before breaking onto the top-flight scene.

The Algerian international was there, scoring valuable goals, as the Foxes completed perhaps the greatest-ever 'Great Escape' from relegation, but it's his 2015/16 exploits which live long in the memory.

Seventeen of his 39 Premier League goals for the Club came as Leicester shocked the world to lift a first-ever English top-flight title in 2016 - a feat which carried odds of 5,000/1 at the season's inception.

As LCFC TV continues to remember City's all-time top-10 Premier League marksmen, here's some of Mahrez's moments of magic which we remember most fondly...

An 11-game winless run came to an end for the Foxes three days after Christmas in 2014 as Mahrez's solitary effort, from the edge of Hull's penalty area, gave Nigel Pearson a victory at his previous employers. Receiving the ball from David Nugent, the Algerian ran at goal before picking his spot into Allan McGregor's bottom corner in the 32nd minute.

With five wins from their previous six games, Leicester were flying ahead of the visit of Southampton to the East Midlands in May 2015. A double from Mahrez, starting with an incredible finish following a mazy run through several Saints midfielders, continued City's excellent form as they edged closer to completing perhaps the best-ever 'Great Escape' from relegation.

Despite a change in management during the summer, City, now under Claudio Ranieri's guidance, started the following season in wonderful form. However, in the 81st minute of a clash with Tottenham, the Foxes fell behind to Dele Alli's first top-flight goal for the north Londoners. Within 60 seconds, though, Mahrez broke down the right wing, cutting inside and finishing powerfully past Hugo Lloris to level the scores.

Despite those pre-season title odds of 5,000/1, the Foxes climbed to the Premier League summit in December with an excellent 2-1 win over José Mourinho's Blues in a clash which turned out to be the Portuguese's final match in charge. After Jamie Vardy's opener, laid on by Mahrez, the former Le Havre winger side-stepped César Azpilicueta before sending a fine effort into the top corner on Filbert Way.

While a win over Liverpool one week earlier made people take notice, a comfortable rout of Manchester City at their own ground wrote its own headlines in February 2016. A brace of close-range efforts from Robert Huth was added to Mahrez's swaggering step-over and finish from distance to firmly establish Leicester as real Premier League title candidates.

A defining five-game winning run began at Watford, thanks to Mahrez's goal.

There was still much work to be done, though. In early March 2016, Ranieri's Foxes got to work on starting a run of five consecutive victories, the first four of which came by a one-goal margin. As the Foxes tightened up at the back, Mahrez was there to sprinkle his stardust with a super effort from 18 yards to settle matters in Hertfordshire. Leicester eventually won the Premier League by 10 points.

While Mahrez was a primary source of goals in the subsequent UEFA Champions League run to the quarter-finals, he also regained his Premier League scoring touch a year later in 2017/18. Claude Puel's City defeated Spurs on Filbert Way in November 2017 with a sublime Vardy lob giving his side a lead which was extended by Mahrez's thunderbolt from distance to wrap up a deserved three points.

Few goals outline Mahrez's magical ability better than this effort in the North East. Collecting the ball midway into Newcastle's half, the Algerian ran and ran before unleashing a rocket beyond the outstretched reach of Karl Darlow to maintain City's encouraging run of form following Puel's appointment in October 2017.

The Foxes needed something special from their Algerian ace in early March 2018 as Josh King's first-half penalty seemed destined to secure victory for the visiting Cherries. Up stepped Mahrez with seconds to spare to accurately curl a free-kick around the wall, towards the bottom corner, and past Asmir Begović to rescue a point for Puel's men, sparking jubilant celebrations.

Mahrez's last-ever goal for Leicester on Filbert Way helped his side register a first league win over Arsène Wenger's Gunners since 1994. His turn and finish in the area came late on, following earlier efforts from Kelechi Iheanacho and Vardy, to see the Foxes conclude their 2017/18 home campaign with a memorable success.
