City Settle For WSL Point Against Spurs
Belgium international Cayman made it two goals in as many games, but a second-half equaliser from Celin Bizet meant the points were shared after a hard-fought battle on a cold afternoon on Filbert Way.
There were two changes to the Leicester line-up that lost to Arsenal last weekend, with Julie Thibaud and the injured Deanne Rose being replaced by Josie Green, and Missy Goodwin, who scored her first goal of the 2023/24 campaign away at Liverpool.
The Foxes started the afternoon full of energy, and were keen to keep to their high standards of pressing from the front, and this almost led to an early goal when Jutta Rantala tried to curl an effort past Rebecca Spencer, and while the Spurs 'keeper did enough to kill the momentum on the ball, her defence was needed to clear any danger before Goodwin had the chance to tap it home.
Leicester did open the scoring just before 20 minutes when, like a carbon copy of the second goal against Arsenal, Hannah Cain broke down the left wing to supply Cayman, who calmly took a touch and finished low into the Spurs net.
The hosts continued to press and looked comfortable, but the attacking prowess of Tottenham was there to see as German shot-stopper Janina Leitzig was called into action numerous times, making an impressive triple save during a moment of sustained pressure from the visitors.
Into the second half and it seemed as though Leicester could be making the same mistake as they did against the Gunners - continuing to press high, while the opposition looked to exploit areas in behind.
Then, 10 minutes on from the restart, Spurs did get back level when Bizet was given sight at goal and punished the Foxes. Although Willie Kirk's side looked determined to get back into the lead when the crossbar denied Sam Tierney and her brilliant effort from range.
Throughout the rest of the game, both sides had chances to win it, however either side would've been disappointed to lose. A positive from the afternoon was the introduction of young stars Ava Baker, and Denny Draper, who recently represented and scored for the England Under-17s, towards the latter stages of the game.
With not much to separate the sides, a point seemed a fair result as Kirk's side managed to stop the run of bad form, and take their tally up to eight for the term, with a Continental Tyres League Cup match up next on Wednesday evening (7pm GMT kick-off) away at Manchester City.
