Schmeichel Named 2017 Danish Footballer Of The Year

Kasper Schmeichel scooped another award on Monday evening after being named 2017 Danish Footballer of the Year.

- It is the second year running the Leicester City goalkeeper has won the accolade 
- Schmeichel has been in red hot form for the Foxes in recent weeks  

Schmeichel beat off stern competition from Borussia Monchengladbach’s Andreas Christensen, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen and Werder Bremen’s Thomas Delaney to win the accolade for the second year running. 

Posting on social media, Schmeichel said: “Very happy to have been voted the Danish Footballer of the Year for the second year running. Thanks to all the people who voted.” 

The stopper has been in sensational form for Leicester City in recent weeks and has kept five clean sheets in six UEFA Champions League appearances this term. 

His two penalty saves during the last-16 tie with Sevilla proved pivotal to City’s qualification for the quarter-finals, while a brace of huge stops to deny Andy Carroll helped record a first away win in the Premier League this season. 

Last term, Schmeichel recorded 15 shutouts in 38 Premier League appearances en route to City’s sensational top flight title triumph. 

Now away with Denmark on international duty, the ‘keeper could be in action at the Telia Parken Stadium on Sunday, when his nation host Romania in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.
