Souttar Strengthens Sheff Utd’s Impressive Start

Harry Souttar played another 90 minutes for Sheffield United and helped to maintain a seventh straight clean sheet in Saturday’s 2-0 home victory over Luton Town at Bramall Lane.

- Several Leicester City loanees were in action this weekend
- Harry Souttar helped Sheffield United to victory in the Championship
- Ben Nelson and Tom Cannon also played in the second tier
- Amani Richards, Brandon Cover, Chris Popov, Brad Young all featured

The Australian centre-back has proved to be an excellent loan signing for the Blades, who sit second in the Sky Bet Championship - only behind leaders Sunderland on goal difference - and remain the only unbeaten side in the division.

Souttar has made eight Championship appearances, as well as captaining his adopted team in the Carabao Cup, and will look to add to his tally when resuming club duties away at Leeds United after the international break, an 8pm kick-off on Friday 18 October.

There was 90 minutes of Championship action for Tom Cannon, too, but he was unable to replicate his four-goal heroics from midweek, as Stoke City drew a blank in Wales against Swansea City on Saturday.

The goalless stalemate leaves the Potters 17th in the standings ahead of hosting Norwich City on Saturday 19 October (3pm kick-off).

Ben Nelson started Oxford United’s 1-1 draw with fellow newly promoted side Portsmouth at Fratton Park at the weekend, playing the first half before being replaced at the break.

His third appearance for the U’s, it sees Des Buckingham’s outfit remain in the top half of the Championship prior to taking on West Bromwich Albion back at Kassam Stadium in two weeks’ time.

Amani Richards was part of the Exeter City side which recorded a second successive 1-0 victory in Sky Bet League 1, beating Cambridge United at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

An early replacement for Josh Magennis, the young Foxes forward played 36 minutes of the contest, which was settled by Ryan Woods’ goal.

The 19-year-old may feature again for the Grecians when visiting Shrewsbury Town on Thursday 17 October (8pm kick-off).

In Sky Bet League 2, meanwhile, third-place AFC Barrow got back to winning ways against Cheltenham Town; Chris Popov playing an hour at Holker Street as the Bluebirds came from behind to claim a 2-1 win and move level on points with leaders Walsall.

Attention turns to the Bristol Streets Trophy tonight (Tuesday), facing Fleetwood Town, though Popov is ineligible having already featured in the competition for Leicester City’s Under-21s earlier this term.

Staying in the fourth tier, Brandon Cover featured in Port Vale’s 1-0 success away to Notts County, appearing across the 90 minutes at Meadow Lane. The 21-year-old, operating as a right-wing back, made his seventh appearance for Darren Moore’s men. The Valiants, inside the top six as things stand, visit Stadium:MK to face MK Dons this Saturday (3pm kick-off).

A second successive start for goalkeeper Brad Young came in Hartlepool United’s thrilling 4-3 success over Sutton United at Victoria Park on Saturday, moving up to 15th in the Vanarama National League. Next up, the North East club host Brackley Town on Saturday in the fourth qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup (3pm kick-off).

Sammy Braybrooke was an unused substitute as Dundee lost 3-2 to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership. League action continues after the international break, facing Motherwell at Fir Park.

All times BST.
