It’s been over a week since City’s last WSL game, which ended in the most of dramatic fashions when Carrie Jones confirmed a third league win of the season for Leicester deep into stoppage time.

Since then, several players have been selected for international duty, leaving the corridors relatively quiet at Belvoir Drive, but training has continued at a high standard during their absence, according to Tierney.

“It was such a good performance from us,” said the versatile defender. “We were very happy after a performance like that, but then most of our squad have jetted off on international duty. The ones that have remained have had a positive few days of training, and hopefully that energy will continue when the others return.

Tierney & Carrie Jones Strike In Reading Win

Goals from Sam Tierney and Carrie Jones guided the Foxes to a late win against Reading on Sunday at King Power Stadium.

“There’s also pros and cons, but you try not to investigate it in too much depth. If everyone performs well in internationals and comes back injury free, then that’s the main thing. We should have enough time when the whole squad is back together to work hard and build up towards the next game, as we want to keep this momentum going."

Tierney netted her fourth goal of the 2022/23 campaign with a first half volley against Reading on Filbert Way, but City's No.3 believes that picking up points is the most significant factor.

She added: “In terms of confidence, the win over Reading shows that we can do what we’re setting out to do. But I think it’s more so about not getting carried away by looking at the table. It’s more important to look on the performances, and make sure the level continues to rise.

We’re just focused on the next game ahead of us, and getting the points we need in terms of our internal points target.

“We are capable of getting the points that we need, but in the same breath we know that nothing has been achieved yet, so our focus is to keep bettering ourselves.

“It was a relief to see the ball hit the net! I had a similar chance against Villa, and I think that was on my mind, to make sure that I finished this chance, and to improve on that.

“After that though, Reading scored so it was about getting back in front and showing a strong mentality, and thankfully Carrie [Jones] got the winner. It’s nice for me to score, but the most important thing is the three points."

The Foxes are next at King Power Stadium when welcoming Liverpool, a team they beat 1-0 in the reverse fixture. Tierney is optimistic that the squad's ability can help to achieve a productive outcome.

Sam Tierney scored her second WSL goal of the season in Leicester's 2-1 win over Reading.

“Liverpool are a tough team with a good style of play,” the 24-year-old admitted. “When we went to their place, it was tough to pick up the points, but we’d like to take a home advantage which has helped us so much this season.

“The league table is something we don't focus on too much, we're just so focused on the next game ahead of us, and getting the points we need in terms of our internal points target.

“But obviously to climb higher in the standings would be massive, and if we could do that it would boost our confidence, especially to do it at King Power Stadium. The main thing is getting three points, and I’m confident in the team to build up towards that game.

“Naturally you do look at the table and see what’s possible, but the best approach is to always focus on what’s right ahead of you, and hopefully get another positive result to build on.”
