Previewing Wednesday's Cup Match With Liverpool Women

LCFC Women face Liverpool in Group B of the Continental Tyres League Cup at Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday evening.
More on this story...

After back-to-back victories, which most recently saw Leicester beat Everton 1-0 in their first Barclays Women's Super League home match against Everton, Willie Kirk's side prepare for the visit of the Reds - another unbeaten team this season - to Burton for a 7pm BST kick-off in the League Cup.

Ahead of the game, here is a look at both sides' start to the season...

Leicester have won both of their opening WSL games.

City are currently enjoying their best start to a WSL season, having won their first two games. First of all, beating newly-promoted Bristol City 4-2 at Ashton Gate, before weaving their way past Everton at King Power Stadium, thanks to a second goal of the season for new forward Lena Petermann.

The Manager's summer additions have made an impressive impact; both the new faces and the old. 'Keeper Janina Leitzig has picked up where she left off during her loan spell with the Club last term, saving a crucial penalty and then follow-up against the Toffees last weekend, showing why Kirk was keen to make her Foxes stay a permanent one.

Attention now turns to the League Cup, as Leicester meet Liverpool in their opening game of Group B, which also includes Everton and Manchester City. A win in Burton on Wednesday night could be deemed crucial to progressing into the knockout stages of the tournament.

Liverpool are yet to concede a goal this camapign.

The battle at Pirelli Stadium will see City take on the only other team in England's top flight with a 100 per cent record. Liverpool have also started the season with intent, managing league success at Arsenal, followed by a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Prenton Park last weekend.

While they have scored less goals than Leicester so far this campaign, they do arrive with a great defensive record. Yet to concede a goal in a competitive game this term, the Foxes must be on their game to beat the Reds, who Kirk believes will be forced to make changes in the team after two tiring WSL performances.

Liverpool manager Matt Beard.

Matt Beard, manager since July of 2021, has so far enjoyed a positive second spell with the club, after six years away, having managed the title-winning Reds for the 2014 and 2015 season, also winning the acclaimed WSL Manager of the Year during both campaigns.

Away from Liverpool, he has also gained experience with Chelsea and West Ham United, taking the Hammers to the final of the Women's FA Cup in May 2019, where they were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City. Now back in Merseyside, he is aiming to improve on last season's seventh-placed finish and looks to be on track with the start to the season they have had.

Missy Goodwin made it 4-0 in the Foxes' last meeting with Liverpool.

Leicester have fond memories of previous meetings with Liverpool, winning on both occasions in the league last season. First of all in February of this year when Hannah Cain swept home a clever corner routine from Courtney Nevin to take the win in Tranmere, as City resurged to safety in the 2022/23 campaign.

Two months later, the Reds travelled to the East Midlands where they were met with a fighting performance from the Foxes, as the home side recorded their biggest ever WSL win, beating Liverpool 4-0 thanks to goals from Josie Green, Carrie Jones, Ashleigh Plumptre and Missy Goodwin.
